Jamie Rose - New York, NY - Alignable

Magazine Overview

We Are Heritage is a magazine that celebrates the creative pursuits of individuals who have embraced their cultural heritage. As its Founder and Creative Director, Jamie Rose, puts it, “We Are Heritage celebrates the spirit of the O.G.S. Black, and fifty shades of brown, artists and creators who have paved the way. We bring you stories of their triumphs, and how they created our rich cultural heritage.”

This magazine is truly special. Not only is its statement bold, impactful, and creatively articulate, its artistry is a visual masterpiece. From its colour dedication to black, white and red, to its style story and declaration of the power of punk, to its interviews ranging from pioneering photographers, musicians, model & photography agencies, artists/designers and novelists, articles featuring the iconic Betty Davis plus more, We Are Heritage has truly pushed the boundaries on magazine storytelling and its role in the cultural arts. Each page could be framed and hung with pride on spacious, brightly lit walls for its consumption and appreciation. I was honoured to be a participant of this project as one of the interviewees.

Interview

My interview with Jamie Rose, Founder of We Are Heritage and New Gods Inc., and creative mastermind behind the newly launched We Are Heritage magazine, was cool and relaxed. Conversational. It’s probably worth adding that Jamie and I are friends, one of my original mentors on my personal creative journey that I orchestrated alongside a professional enterprise sales career. So we would frequently during our regular catch ups rift about subject matters ranging from creative writing, black culture and activism, spirituality, business and technological advancements.

This interview didn’t veer far off from our usual subjects, however it did capture my journey from writing a coming of age story drenched in its cultural dynamics and stylistic flair, to entering offline media sales, evolving into digital media sales, advertising technology sales, and then marketing technology sales.  And he managed to include my MBA and subject matter of my dissertation, as well as how my character shows up to execute in these areas alongside a family and full-time job, in addition to the workplace as what some might call an outlier existing as one of few black individuals, women, and a working-class background, however what I would call a strong character manoeuvring in the spaces that interest me irrespective of the majority profiles who occupy them. Make space, is what I say, I’m coming through.

Full interview starts on page 294 titled: “I got a Story to Tell.” RIP Christopher Wallace
