About Robert Elms
Robert Elms is a highly regarded British broadcaster, journalist, and writer, best known for his long-running show on BBC Radio London. He’s a prominent figure in London’s cultural scene, with a career spanning several decades, and an academic backgrounded grounded in sociology from the London School of Economics. Coupled with a love for the arts created a future career in media.
Robert Elms began his career as a journalist in the late 1970s, writing for prominent music and lifestyle publications such as The Face, NME, and The Observer. He became particularly known for his coverage of the emerging post-punk and new wave music scenes, as well as the broader cultural movements of the time. In 1994, Robert Elms joined BBC Radio London (then known as GLR), where he began hosting a daily show. Over the years, his program has become a staple for Londoners, focusing on the city’s cultural life, history, architecture, and more.
Elms’ radio show is celebrated for its eclectic mix of interviews, music, and discussions on London-centric topics. He often features a wide array of guests, including musicians, writers, artists, and local historians, making his show a go-to for anyone interested in London’s rich cultural tapestry.
Having listened to Elm’s radio show over the years, I was beyond excited to be his guest!
Interview Preamble
A calm and relaxed drive with my teenage daughter ended in London’s West End 50 minutes later. We listened to the Robert Elms show on BBC London Radio. Butterflies erupted from my stomach and exploded into a smile across my face when Robert interjects the soundtrack playing with, “…and later we’ll be meeting London author, Monique Campbell, who’s written a book, Once Bad Intentions, about a black girl’s journey growing up in 90s working-class London…”
“Aaahhh! Mummy, he’s talking about you!!” she screeched reminding me of the conversation…the interview, I had prepared myself for.
We walked past the BBC London studios en route to Joe’s Juices 30 minutes ahead of time. I had a nervous grumble in my tummy I was confident a green juice would subdue.
A senior producer warmly escorted us to the waiting the studio waiting area with ten minutes to go before all the magic would happen. I asked if my daughter could join Robert and me in the studio. The producer scuttled away to check with Robert and returned with a thumbs up approval.
“Are you ready?” my daughter and emotional support asked.
“Yes,” I replied, and the interview commenced….
